PRINCETON, WV (WVNS) – Election years always draw more major disagreements between would-be friends compared to other years.

Many people feel as though there is more division than ever among people in the United States of America.

Whether it be at events, in the workplace, or even at the family dinner table – differences seem to be taking control of relationships all over the country.

Some reasons for the split can be trivial – like being fans of different sports teams or going to different schools.

However, one of the biggest reasons for these divides is politics.

Last weekend for West Virginia Renaissance Festival

Monte Wall is a U.S. Army veteran. He said some things are deeper than political divides. “Politics should never enter this. This is the Fourth of July for all Americans. I don’t care who you are or what country you come from. If you’re an American citizen, this is to honor you and us and the freedom we have.”

Madison Gunnoe is the event director for the City of Princeton. She said today provides an opportunity to reflect on what we have here in the US. “We have the opportunity to do so many things that not everybody has the opportunity to do. We had troops fight for us and for our ability to be free.”

America is more than just polarizing political parties.

One of the key things that the U.S. was founded on was freedom for everyone, regardless of race, religion, or political stance.

In the years since America was founded, there have been many brave men and women who have fought and are still fighting to maintain our freedom.

Two band members of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s original tribute band, Second Helping, who are also veterans, told 59News that Independence Day should serve as a reminder for all Americans.

Guitarist for Second Helping, Chris McCallister said, “Of all the days, this is the day you’re just an American, man.”

Second Helping lead singer, Jon Riggs added, “That’s right. We’re not Republicans, we’re not Democrats, we’re Americans. Where we fall on the line doesn’t matter because we’re all brothers and sisters and we need to accept each other, take care of each other, and make the world a better place.”
