The 2024 Crooked River Roundup Race Meet is in the books, and things could not have run smoother.

Despite hot weather, crowds were good and racing was competitive all four nights of the race meet.

“The crowd was a little late coming out every day and then it would kind of peak up a little bit,” race meet director Doug Smith said. “We were a little short on Thursday, but you know with the kind of temperatures we were facing this year I’m very pleased. The good thing is it’s Prineville’s party. Everybody that was here had fun.”

Although there were some late scratches in a few races, most races had six or more horses, and although there were a few dominant wins most races were competitive. One of those dominant wins was Saturday night in the Prineville OHBPA Stakes where Nashville Skyline, ridden by Vladimir Jensen, covered the mile and an eighth in a time of 2:03.29 to win by more than 29 lengths.

However, the remainder of Saturday’s races were fiercely contested. In the biggest race of the night, Jose Guerrero rode Bee a Freight Train to victory in the $24,474 Rhoden Memorial Bonus Challenge Stakes quarter horse race. Bee a Freight ran just off the track record, finishing with a time of 13.079 for the 250 yards. One Famous Rock with Jake Samuels on board was close behind with a time of 13.134, while The Rev Rocker ridden by Cesar Moreno finished third in a time of 13.179.

In the race with the second biggest purse of the meet Jake Samuels rode Weston to victory in the Woodward Memorial Stakes, covering the five and one half furlongs in a time of 1:06.43. I’m Still Thirsty ridden by Jaime Lopez closed late, but was unable to catch Samuels and Weston.

In the other big race Saturday, Lopez rode El Chumelito to victory in the seven-furlong Art Smith Memorial race, edging Defense Wins ridden by Vladimir Jensen at the wire.

Samuels earned jockey of the meet honors with 13 victories out of the 36 races contested, while Lopez also had a good meet winning nine races. Jensen, Guerro and Jose Rodriguez each won four races apiece.

Hector Magallanes was the trainer of the meet with five wins, while Benito Curriel-trained horses won four races and Travis Wheeler and Mario Portillo each won three races as 21 trainers won at least one race. Twenty-nine different owners won at least one race over the four-day race meet, with Homer Thoroughbreds Inc, Alan D. Peterson and Malon L. Cowgill owned horses each winning three races.

“We had a full room of jockeys, and good riders,” Smith said. “Every horse had a chance. The track has been immaculate and the horsemen have just been incredible. They are doing it for love of the sport. We are doing it for the love of the sport. The riders are doing it for the love of the sport and I think our fans love the sport too.”

Smith was quick to add that the race meet would not have been possible without the host of volunteers that work the event, noting that it takes 200 volunteers to make the race meet happen.

“I’m tickled pink with the way things have gone at the meet,” he said. “What makes Prineville so special is we have people that are qualified to do jobs that other people have to pay for. That’s what allows us to grow and have the best purses in the state to compete with some of the smaller commercial meets and still be a nonprofit.”

Smith added that in spite of being a nonprofit, the Crooked River Roundup Race Meet is able to generate enough income to be able to make regular updates to the facility. This year they added a new stall barn, and the county used lottery money to build a new jockey facility. In addition the race meet continues to make updates to the way the meet is run. This year a GoPro was added to the paddock area so that race fans could watch the horses being saddled and readied to race.

In addition, last year FastBet Mobile was added to the race meet allowing people to bet on their phone from their seat in the grand stands. Last year three percent of the total betting took place on the app. Although Smith did not have totals from this year, he noted that just on Friday there was a larger handle than for all four nights in 2023.

“I’ve been trying to pattern this after the Miles City, Montana, bucking horse sale,” Smith said. “They handled almost half of their money on Mothers Day on FastBet Mobile. So, what it would do is eliminate the lines at the betting windows and then we could start clocking instead of a 30 minute pace, which we’ve been able to do the last three days here, but we could start talking about a 28 minute pace or a 27 minute pace and that’s half an hour at the end of the night.”

Although there were two riders thrown from their horses during the race meet, both are doing fine. Smith noted that the first injured some ribs, but is eager to get back to racing, while the second sprained an ankle on Saturday, but after missing just one race finished the remainder of the racing Saturday night.

In closing Smith noted that he was very pleased with the four-day race meet.

“I think that it’s so incredible to see the horsemen walk up and say they love the crowds in Prineville,” he said. “Our fans are knowledgeable. They are loud. They are boisterous. They are having fun and the horsemen and riders just can’t believe there is still a place where live racing is fun.”
