Shall Crook County be divided into two or more counties? This is a question that will not down. It arises in greater or less force at each recurring biennial election and sooner or later must be finally decided. The question is an important one and should be approached fairly, judiciously and without prejudice. In this spirit, apparently, a movement is now on to call this question up for decision at the coming election. The time for open, frank and fair discussion is now here.

Three Crook County high school seniors received severe injuries last Friday night at about 5:15 when the car in which they were riding smashed into a pickup on Ochoco Highway. Gary Romine, 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. W.M. Romine, received a gash on his left hand, glass cuts on his neck and right knee and other cuts and bruises. Doug Johnson, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Johnson, suffered a broken left wrist, fractured jaw and dislocated left hip. LaSelle Coles, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. LaSelle E. Coles, broke his right leg and received serious bruises and cuts.

The three boys were traveling east on the highway when a pickup driven by Dean Cardin, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.L. Cardin, backed out of Aschbacher Lane, four miles east of Prineville, Dean reported. The Romine car, driven by Gary, smashed into the pickup, jumped to the left side of the highway and glanced off a tree, only to be hit and stopped by another. The car is beyond repair, Mr. Romine said.

Dean Cardin, a member of the CCHS graduating class this year, received a cut on his head and strained his neck. He was released from the hospital Monday morning.

The other three boys are in the Prineville General Hospital and are reported as “coming along fine” by hospital attendants.

In light of the new federal and state laws, the Crook County Court will re-examine the operation of the county nursing home.

Crook County entered into an agreement with Pioneer Memorial Hospital in 1960, and that agreement has not been changed since then.

In a Nursing Home Advisory Board meeting, commissioners and board members received an explanation of new legislation from George Pierce, administrator of the Columbia Nursing Home in The Dalles. Pierce explained that one new law requires the nursing home to have a licensed administrator, which the county does not have.

The county is considering a reorganization of the nursing home and will re-examine the agreement with the hospital.

In a letter to the city, Brad Goff reported that with the odor problems in the Crestview area, there is good news and bad news.

Goff said he really appreciated the fact that for the past few weeks, his house has not been filled with a sewer odor.

“It’s getting better, a lot better than two weeks ago. But it’s still there.”

The major odor problem for Goff’s neighborhood in recent weeks has been coming down the airport development sewer line. Once the city lined the last manhole cover with plastic, that problem has diminished a great deal … although one of the his neighbors still suffers.
