A brush fire broke out Saturday afternoon about 6 miles north of Prineville that is spreading fast and prompting evacuations.

According to an Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) report, the fire was reported around 3:30 p.m. The Cat Rock Fire is burning toward the southeast and has grown to an estimated 500 acres. U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and Crook County Fire and Rescue are assisting at the fire. In addition, aircraft are actively engaged on the wildfire.

Structures are reportedly threatened, and Crook County Sheriff’s has closed McKay Creek Road at the intersection with Gerke Road until the fire is controlled in that area. Authorities are asking members of the public to avoid roads in areas near the fire to allow firefighter access and for the safety of motorists.

Lt. Mitch Madden, with Crook County Sheriff’s Office, reported that a Level 2 (Be Ready) evacuation has been issued from the 1800 block of Northeast McKay Road south to Northeast Dry Creek Road.

A shelter has been set up for evacuees at Carey Foster Hall, on the Crook County Fairgrounds. People who have livestock can move them to a space at the fairgrounds as well.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
