Avery G. Scoggin, who for quite a number of years has owned the stage line between Paulina and Prineville, was murdered at this home near Paulina last Friday morning as he sat at breakfast by Henry McDowell, one of his drivers.

Scoggin was killed as he sat at breakfast talking over business affairs with George Taylor, with whom he was a partner in the horse business. During the talk, McDowell came into the room with a loaded Winchester. He accused Scoggin of making threats to take his life and order Scoggin out into the yard.

According to Taylor, Scoggin denied making any sort of threat against McDowell and paid no more attention to McDowell. When the latter saw that Scoggin was not going to do as he was bidden, he raised the rifle to his shoulder and fired, the bullet taking effect just under and to the left of the right ear. McDowell fired from behind and so as not to harm Taylor, show sat opposite Scoggin at the table.

Death was instantaneous. Scoggin never moved from his chair during the entire incident. So powerful was the impact of the bullet that brains and skull bones were scattered all over the table, the room and some were even found in an adjoining room where they had passed through an open door.

A thousand-acre forest fire, apparently started by a lightning storm Monday night, was raging out of control today at the Hardscrabble ridge area about 80 miles southeast of Prineville in the Paulina ranger district. Forest service officials reported more than 300 men from woods crews of the Prineville and Paulina mills, as well as crews from the Deschutes, Mt. Hood and Willamette national forest offices are working with Ochoco National Forest officers in fighting the big fire.

Crook County’s first budget request since 1965 over the constitutional 6% limitation was defeated Tuesday by a vote of over two to one.

With only 18% of the registered voters exercising their option to vote, the request for $133,837 over the 6% limitation was defeated by a vote of 283 yes votes to 670 no votes.

The budget did not win voter approval in one precinct with precincts 1, 8, 15, 17 voting 80 yes and 185 no. Precincts 2, 5, 6, 7 voted 114 yes votes to 145 no votes. Precincts 3, 4, 16 voted 35 yes votes to 138 no votes while precinct 12 voted 5 yes votes and 14 no votes. Precinct 9 had 4 yes votes to 14 no votes and precinct 11 recorded 12 yes votes to 46 no votes.

Some county observers expressed shock that there was so little concern among the voters, shown by the poor turnout in voting. Of the 5,190 registered voters in Crook County, only 953 voted, amounting to an 18% turnout.

A 30-year-old Prineville woman has discovered the truth in the old adage that crime doesn’t pay.

A few weeks ago, officials at Ochoco Thriftway began to suspect that money was missing from the store. Prineville Police Chief Jim Soules said that initially they looked internally for the responsible party.

“Before calling us,” Soules said, “the management identified the person that appeared to be taking the money and contacted us.”

Surveillance cameras were placed in strategic positions and over a period of several weeks, evidence was gathered.
