'What Are You Doing?!' Car Attempts To Drive Through Closed, Flooded Road On Long Island

    2024-03-24

SYOSSET, N.Y. - Two vehicles became stranded in flooding that shut down Jericho Turnpike in both directions late Saturday afternoon following persistent downpours. A driver decided to ignore the blocked road and was subsequently stopped by DOT employees.

    "What are you doing?!"

A perplexed worker from the New York State DOT yelled at a driver who attempted to circumnavigate cones, heavy-duty trucks, and various other indicators that Jericho Turnpike was closed in both directions due to flooding from heavy rainfall on Saturday. The exact reason that the SUV driver disregarded the road closure is unknown.

Shortly after 5:00PM, Nassau County Police responded to Jericho Turnpike, just east of Robbins Lane after two vehicles became stranded in high floodwaters that deluged the entire road.

Video captured the moments as a family waded through the flooded roadway to escape their stalled luxury sedan after it became stranded in more than 6 inches of water.

There were no reported injuries to any of the occupants that were stranded in both vehicles.

The flooding on the road appeared to have been caused by an overflowing sump nearby, as water surged onto Jericho Turnpike resembling a small river. New York State DOT workers sprang into action, deploying sandbags to attempt curbing the flow of the water and preventing further flooding.

Jericho Turnpike remained closed in both directions between Robbins Lane and Eileen Way while crews worked to clear the submerged roadway and both stalled vehicles.
