Police Car Rear-Ended On Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway, Officer Hurt

    2024-03-30

SYOSSET, N.Y. - A police officer conducting a commercial vehicle inspection was injured after a car rear-ended their patrol vehicle on the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway Thursday afternoon, just one day after New York expanded its "Move Over" law.

Shortly before 3:30PM on Thursday, first responders rushed to the northbound lanes of the Seaford-Oyster Bay Expressway at Jericho Turnpike after two Nassau County police officers assigned to Highway Patrol's Motor Carrier Unit were rear-ended by a car traveling northbound on the expressway.

During a commercial vehicle inspection on the side of the highway near Exit 14W, a Nissan sedan lost control slammed into the parked police SUV, striking the officers from behind.

Police say one of the two police officers inside the vehicle sustained minor injuries. The driver of the Nissan was transported to a local hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

Both vehicles suffered significant damage as a result of the collision.

The highway exit remained open while first responders operated at the crash site, but there were reported delays as motorists were forced to drive on the shoulder to navigate around the crash.

It was unclear if weather conditions played a factor in the crash.

The crash comes just one day after New York State expanded its "Move Over" law, citing that drivers are now required to slow down and move over for all vehicles stopped on the side of the road, not just first responders with emergency lights activated.
