    2024-04-17

WEST BABYLON, N.Y. - Firefighters battled a stubborn fire for hours after flames broke out and rapidly spread through flammable materials in a Suffolk County waste transfer facility.

Just before 12:00PM on Monday, firefighters from more than a dozen local fire departments responded to the Winter Brothers recycling and waste facility at 19 Nancy Street in West Babylon after a fire broke out inside a transfer building on the property.

Arriving fire companies were greeted by a thick column of black smoke ascending into the sky over the industrial district west of Straight Path as the fire continued to burn intensely.

The flames rapidly spread through the flammable materials - including paper and cardboard - that were contained inside the building used to transfer recyclables.

Amidst the ongoing efforts to extinguish the stubborn blaze, all waste transfer operations were halted and rerouted to alternative facilities. Firefighters persevered well into late Monday afternoon working to contain the inferno.

Throughout Monday evening, fire crews continued to extinguish the remaining pockets of fire embedded within the hundreds of pounds of waste.
