DFPA ATTACKS GOODRICH HIGHWAY FIRE SATURDAY
Firefighters with the Douglas Forest Protective Association and other agencies dealt with the Goodrich Highway Fire north of Oakland on Saturday. Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said at approximately 1:50 p.m. crews with DFPA, Oakland Rural Fire Protection District, Elkton Rural Fire Protection District, North Douglas County Fire and EMS, and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a grass fire near the intersection of Goodrich Highway and John Long Road.
DFPA DEALS WITH SPIKE BUCK FIRE LATE FRIDAY
Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association dealt with the Spike Buck Fire in the Yoncalla area early Friday evening. Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said at 5:15 p.m. DFPA and North Douglas County Fire and EMS responded to an estimated quickly moving 2-acre fire located in an estimated 1-10-year-old replanted timber unit, about 8 miles northeast of Yoncalla.

PROGRESS CONSTRUCTING DIRECT FIRE LINE ON SALMON 33 FIRE
The seven fires of the Homestead Complex total 1,261 acres as of midday Saturday, with 4 percent containment. An Umpqua National Forest update said a hotshot crew camped out near the Salmon 33 Fire, which is 142 acres, on Thursday and Friday nights to maximize opportunities to construct fire line during cooler evening and morning conditions, when the fire is less active. They are working with a hand crew to make progress creating direct line on the east side. Other resources are being shifted to that area to assist in completing the line on the east flank of the fire.

Facing housing shortages, Roseburg advances changes to its growth boundary
Roseburg’s City Council voted unanimously this week to approve changes to its Urban Growth Boundary, in an effort to create more housing in the area. The city wants to cut two difficult-to-develop properties from its growth boundary, and replace them with flat land in the Charter Oaks neighborhood. City staff say this would allow for the construction of hundreds of new homes.

NORTH BEND, Ore. — North Bend High School graduate Bridger Holmes was recently drafted in the seventh round by the Los Angeles Angels. He’s been playing baseball since he was five years old and became the sixth player from North Bend High School to be drafted in the last 40 years.
