PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — It’s World Giraffe Week, and Roger Williams Park Zoo welcomed a new member to its family.

Enzi, a one-year-old male, comes from Zoo New England’s Franklin Park Zoo. He joins the zoo’s existing female giraffes, Cora and Providence.

The zoo said the name Enzi translates to “powerful” in Swahili.

Masai giraffes, like Enzi, are classified as endangered, according to the zoo. Their population has been cut in half due to habitat loss and illegal hunting.

The zoo said Enzi’s arrival is part of its commitment to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan to encourage breeding and secure the giraffes’ future.

As of last month, the International Union for Conservation of Nature estimated there are just 32,000 Masai giraffes left in the world.
