PROVIDENCE – People in and around the Port of Providence will hear the sound of sirens at noon today, but it won't be for an emergency.

The Providence Emergency Management Agency will conduct a test of the port's emergency warning system.

"These sirens may be audible in surrounding communities," the city said in a press release, "Residents do not need to take any action during this test. The alert signal will be followed by the message: 'This is a test of the emergency management public warning system. This is only a test.' "

The goal is to ensure the sirens and their system control panels are working properly.
