Here are some of The Providence Journal's most-read stories for the week of June 30, supported by your subscriptions.
- Gaston Malloy grew up poor in a segregated town in North Carolina and couldn't afford a trumpet when he joined his school band, forcing him to borrow a taped-together trombone instead. When he later became a musician and a band director in East Providence, he began refurbishing secondhand instruments and providing them free to any students who needed them. Thirty years later, he's still an unsung hero in putting music in reach of everyone, regardless of family income. Read his inspiring story.
- New this week in our 2024 Summer Guide: 10 great summer hikes recommended by Walking Rhode Island columnist John Kostrzewa, and John's hiking tips for beginners; sportswriter Eric Rueb lists 5 of RI's best public golf courses; pack the car and head on an adventure with these five scenic summer drives in RI; celebrate the state's favorite shellfish by hosting a clambake (it's easier than you think, with our handy guide); if having a drink with friends includes your pooch, check out our favorite dog-friendly bars; or if you want to sip non-alcoholic beer with the ocean at your feet, try these five spots. And no summer would be complete in RI without plenty of frozen lemonade.
- The wait is over: CHOP – short for Culinary Hub of Providence, a hybrid restaurant and training kitchen – has opened at the Providence Public Library. Food editor Gail Ciampa says it's a winner, with great food and a book-themed decor.

President Raimondo? Former RI governor’s name bubbling up as possible Biden replacement
In some circles far beyond her home state of Rhode Island, former venture capitalist and former Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo's name has earned a few mentions on speculative lists of potential future presidential or vice-presidential candidates in the unlikely event President Joe Biden is replaced as the party's nominee.
The name checks for the current U.S. commerce secretary have ticked up in the days since Biden's debate performance last Thursday sent waves of soul-searching and panic through Democratic Party ranks.
While Raimondo's name rarely makes the top of anyone's list of potential last-minute replacements for Biden, Yahoo Finance recently published a story speculating about "President Raimondo," based on interviews with people in the business world who view her as a "pro-business Democrat."

AG, former CRMC official slam country club's attempt to change rules for illegal seawall
Attorney General Peter Neronha is slamming the Quidnessett Country Club in North Kingstown for retroactively seeking to change rules that, he said, it has "already brazenly violated by building an illegal seawall."
In a letter released on Friday, Neronha called on the Coastal Management Resources Council to "reject QCC’s efforts to circumvent the law." Ruling otherwise, he said, "would only serve to reward the QCC for illegally constructing first and asking for permission later, and would incentivize other shoreline property owners to do the same."
Former CRMC deputy director James Boyd expressed similar opinions in a scathing letter of his own last week.
The country club argues that the seawall is needed to protect its 18-hole golf course from erosion and damage from coastal storms. Read the full story for background on the disputed seawall, and why state officials say it would set a dangerous precedent.

Richard Bland wins US Senior Open in dramatic finish at Newport Country Club
It was as much a statement as it was the bunker shot that helped him win the U.S. Senior Open.
Richard Bland wanted it to be known he was making par. Hiroyuki Fujita would have to match him to continue their playoff at Newport Country Club.
The fourth extra hole was where the drama ended on a splendid Monday morning, an epic two-day fourth round that was interrupted by thunderstorms the previous afternoon. Bland tapped in from inches away and Fujita couldn’t coax home a sliding 20-footer, the slim difference at one of American golf’s founding venues.
It was Bland who donned the winner’s gold medal and lifted the trophy after matching Fujita through regulation at 13-under par.
Read more about the tournament, and the behind-the-scenes folks who helped make it happen.
