Happy birthday, Nibbles! RI icon turns 44 years old

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island’s most famous termite celebrated his 44th birthday Wednesday.

Nibbles Woodaway, more commonly referred to as the “ Big Blue Bug ,” has been watching over I-95 since 1980.

The oversized termite was originally created as a marketing ploy for New England Pest Control. Nibbles, who is 58-feet-long, 9-feet-tall and weighs roughly 4,000 pounds, became so popular that the pest control service later rebranded to Big Blue Bug Solutions.

In a social media post Wednesday morning, Big Blue Bug Solutions encouraged commuters to wish Nibbles a happy birthday while driving by.

12 News’ Shiina LoSciuto and Ryan Welch made sure to sing “Happy Birthday” to Nibbles on their way back to East Providence later that afternoon.
