The Providence Journal is proud to announce the 2024 All-State Boys Track team, sponsored by Tufts Health Plan. The Providence Journal has been naming All-State teams for more than 80 years to recognize and celebrate the top student-athletes across Rhode Island. The Journal Sports staff, with some help from the coaches associations, determine the first- and second-team members. The All-State teams are also posted on the High School Sports Awards page on providence journal.com/sports.

All first-team members were nominees for Player of the Year in that sport, and winners were announced at the High School Sports Awards show held in June at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence, featuring former Oklahoma softball star Nicole Mendes, who is now an ESPN analyst.

In Boys Track, The Providence Journal Player of the Year is Ethan Knight of Barrington.

2024 Providence Journal All-State Boys Track and Field

    First Team

    Thomas Breen

    Classical, Senior

Breen closed his career as one of the state’s top middle-distance runners. He took home gold at the state meet in the 800 meters and followed with bronze in the same event at the New England Championships.

    Damon Buchanan

    Hendricken, Senior

Buchanan helped the Hawks contend for a state team title by adding to their collection of individual golds. He took the top spot in the javelin at Conley Stadium and will continue his athletic career this fall at Dickinson College.

    Aidan Chen

    Portsmouth, Junior

Chen’s efficiency helped earn him a gold medal in the high jump at the state meet. He cleared 6 feet, 4 inches and totaled fewer misses than his peers throughout the competition. Chen also closed in a tie for eighth place at the New England Championships.

    Carson Dean

    Hendricken, Junior

Dean dominated the state field in the pole vault on his way to gold. He cleared 14 feet, 6 inches to post a winning mark — that was 2 feet above anyone else in the competition.

    Matt Giuliano

    Hendricken, Senior

Giuliano outlasted a tight state meet field to capture gold in the hammer throw. Six boys checked in at 205 feet or better and Giuliano’s winning mark of 217 feet, 9 inches was best. He’ll continue his career next season at Louisville.

    Konny Ezeama

    Smithfield, Senior

Ezeama continued his family legacy of strong performances in the sport for the Sentinels. He brought home gold in the state meet triple jump by almost 2 feet, posting a mark of 44 feet, 9¾ inches. Ezeama will continue his career next season at Cornell.

    Elijah Gardea

    Central, Senior

Gardea claimed the title of the state’s fastest boy this spring. He blazed to gold in the 100 meters on his home track at Conley Stadium, clocking a time of 10.7 seconds. Gardea added fourth place at the state meet in the 200.

    Sean Gray

    Portsmouth, Sophomore

Gray turned in one of the afternoon’s most stunning performances while claiming state gold in the 3,000 meters. He set a blistering early pace and maintained it all the way to the line, crushing the field by more than 24 seconds. Gray added fifth place in the 2-mile at the New England Championships.

    Ethan Knight

    Barrington, Senior

Knight helped lead the Eagles to their first outdoor team title in program history by sweeping the hurdles. He won the 100-meter and 300-meter versions at Conley Stadium and closed fourth in the 300 at the New England Championships. Knight is The Providence Journal Boys Track Player of the Year, and will continue his career next season at Bucknell.

    Will O’Shea

    Cumberland, Senior

O’Shea impressed at the state meet by holding off a tough field in the 1,500 meters, outlasting two other runners within a second and another within two seconds. He followed with fourth place at the New England Championships in the mile. O’Shea will continue his career next season at Stonehill.

    Alonso Parker-Sharpe

    Cranston West, Senior

Parker-Sharpe was one of the state’s fastest boys throughout his career with the Falcons. He closed a final state meet at Cranston West with silver in the 100 meters and 200 meters.

    Elias Sposato

    Chariho, Senior

Sposato claimed two golds and a meet record while starring at his final state meet. His time of 21.44 seconds was a new meet best in the 200 meters and Sposato added another title in the 400 meters. Sposato will continue his career just down the road next season at the University of Rhode Island.

    Marcus Sukkar

    Hendricken, Senior

Sukkar brought home a discus title as the Hawks remained in contention for a team title until deep into the state meet. His mark of 159 feet, 8 inches was more than 7 feet better than the field. Sukkar will continue his athletic career on the football field with Brown in the fall.

    Patrick Trainor

    Barrington, Sophomore

Trainor helped the Eagles to a team crown by taking home the long jump. His mark of 22 feet, 3 inches made him the only athlete in the field to crack 22 feet. Barrington followed its indoor title with a first outdoor in program history.

    Brandon Wolfenden

    Pilgrim, Junior

Wolfenden smashed the shot put field by more than 3 feet while taking home gold from the state meet. His winning mark of 56 feet, 10½ inches put him comfortably ahead of his nearest competition.

La Salle 4x100 (Joshua Aceto, Junior; Garrett Giroux-Pezzullo, Sophomore; Antonio Bearden, Sophomore; Amari Monteiro, Junior)

La Salle 4x400 (Amari Monteiro, Junior; Thaden Leomensah, Junior; Antonio Bearden, Sophomore; Garrett Giroux-Pezzullo, Sophomore)

The Rams set a pair of meet records while sweeping the sprint relays, and they used five underclassmen to do it. Giroux-Pezzullo, Bearden and Monteiro each ran a leg on both teams. Aceto joined the 4x100 to clock 41.94 seconds and Leomensah joined the 4x400 — which also took bronze in the New England Championships — to hit the line in 3:19.34.

Classical 4x800 (Thomas Breen, Senior; James Courtney, Senior; Michael Healey, Senior; Ben O’Sullivan, Senior)

Four seniors from the Purple blitzed the field by nearly seven seconds to set a new meet record in the distance relay. Breen, Courtney, Healey and O’Sullivan capped their final state championships with gold in 7 minutes, 53.49 seconds. That time broke the previous mark set by Westerly in 2009.
