These players had lots of drive. Presenting the 2024 Providence Journal All-State Golf Team

The Providence Journal is proud to announce the 2024 All-State Golf first and second teams, presented by the Ocean State Golf Academy. The Providence Journal has been naming All-State teams for more than 80 years to recognize and celebrate the top student-athletes across Rhode Island. The Journal Sports staff, with some help from the coaches associations, determines the first- and second-team members. The All-State teams are also posted on the High School Sports Awards page on providence journal.com/sports.

All first-team members were nominees for Player of the Year in that sport, and winners were announced at the High School Sports Awards show held last month at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence, featuring former Oklahoma softball star Nicole Mendes, who is now an ESPN analyst .

In Golf, the Providence Journal Player of the Year is Rocco Capalbo, of Prout.

2024 Providence Journal All State Golf Team

Rocco Capalbo

Prout, Freshman

It didn’t take long for Capalbo to establish himself as one of the state’s best golfers before showing exactly how good he was. The freshman Crusader’s RIIL State Tournament debut was incredible. He tied for the lead with a 1-over-par 72 on Day 1 and came back on Day 2 with no nerves and shot 2-under on the back nine to close out a 1-under round and a win at Cranston Country Club.

Adam Gorman

Barrington, Senior

Gorman was a model of consistency in his final season and ends it with his debut appearance as an All-Stater. After grinding this spring, Gorman went to Cranston Country Club ranked 15th in the state. But he put it all together over two days. His rounds of 75-74 —149 put him in sixth place overall, earning his slot on the team.

Max Jackson

La Salle, Senior

Jackson showed what kind of player he is over the last 18 holes of his high school career. The two-time state champ struggled on Day 1 in the state tournament at Cranston Country Club. But he followed that on Day 2 by tying for the low round of the day, shooting a 2-under 69 to cement his spot as a four-time first-team All-Stater and helping the Rams win the team title.

Andrew Lavoie

Coventry, Senior

Lavoie was the surprise of the 2024 RIIL Golf Championships and his play earned him a spot as a first-team All-Stater. Lavoie showed up ranked outside the top 20 in the state, but the Oakers’ No. 2 player was steady in both rounds at Cranston Country Club, shooting a 74-74 — 148 to finish in fifth place overall.

Drew MacLeod

La Salle, Freshman

MacLeod showed off his talent early in the season when he shot a 29 at Kirkbrae Country Club during a regular-season match and he didn’t disappoint in his debut at the RIIL Golf Championships. MacLeod was tied for the lead after Day 1 and battled tough throughout Day 2 to finish 71-73 —144, putting him in a tie for second and setting the stage for a promising career.

Will Owens

North Kingstown, Senior

Owens, a second-team selection as a sophomore, finished his career with a round to remember in the RIIL Golf Championships at Cranston Country Club. Near the top of the leaderboard after Day 1, Owens shot 3-under on the front nine to put himself in a tie for first before the birdie magic ran out on the back. Owens finished his two days 75-69 —144, good for second place and a spot as a first-team All-Stater.
