PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Crews were on the scene of a tanker truck carrying gasoline that tipped over on an I-95 North on-ramp in Providence Saturday afternoon.

Gasoline from the Roberts Energy truck, which contained 11,000 gallons, leaked onto the road.

A large portion of Allens Avenue was blocked off from Oxford Street to Ernest Street. The Thurbers Avenue off-ramp was also closed.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) worked on the cleanup.

A DEM spokesperson told 12 News Saturday evening that the cleanup “is well underway” and a response team ” is using several methods to contain and remove the gasoline.”

“Foam has been deployed on the roadway and the DEM responders are working on a plan to contain the gasoline and other chemicals from impacting the river,” the spokesperson said. “Vacuum trucks just arrived on scene to pump the gasoline from the road and catch basin.”

Once the spill is contained, crews will then remove the truck, the DEM spokesperson added.

DEM urged the public to avoid this area.

The driver wasn’t injured, according to a state trooper on the scene. It’s unclear at this time what caused the truck to tip over.
