PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) — An estimated 2,500 gallons of gasoline spilled out of a fuel tanker truck that tipped over on an on-ramp to I-95 Saturday.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) says the truck was removed from the on-ramp around 5 a.m. Sunday after the remainder of the gasoline was removed. The ramp has since reopened.

“Response operations caused increased water flow into the drain system, resulting in gasoline and oil discharge into the Providence River,” RIDEM said in a press release Sunday.

Floating containment booms have bee set up in the river to prevent further environmental impacts.

RIDEM is overseeing the clean-up in addition to a contract, New England Disposal Technologies who were hired by the trucking company.

The truck was holding 11,000 gallons of gasoline. The flipped truck caused a large portion of Allens Avenue to be block off.

A state trooper on scene said the driver wasn’t injured. It’s still unclear what caused the truck to tip over.

In 2018, a tanker truck tipped over on that same on-ramp and caused nearly 11,000 gallons of gasoline to spill on the roadway.
