    Here are 7 RI athletes who have won gold at the Olympics. Can you name them?

    The 2024 summer Olympics are starting and all eyes are turning to Paris as athletes gather to either make their name or defend their status from all over the world.

    Rhode Island has a long history of producing exceptional Olympians, with gold medalists going back over 100 years.

    Whether or not you care for the sport in question, there's always a special thrill when you learn that your hometown or state is being represented on the world stage. For that moment thousands of people hear your town's name. Granted, they'll forget it in the next three seconds, but it's there!

    Here are the men and women who made put the Ocean State on international broadcast.

    Olympic gold medalists from Rhode Island

    Aileen Riggin, Newport - Won the gold medal in the three-meter springboard diving at the 1920 Olympics in Antwerp, Belgium.

    Janet Stone, Barrington - She was a member of the winning 4x100 track relay team at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland.

    Harriet Metcalf, Providence - Earned a gold medal in rowing at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles.

    Lynne Jewell-Shore, Newport - Won a gold medal in sailing at the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

    Vicki Movsessian-Lamoriello, Lincoln - member of the gold winning women's ice hockey team at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

    Sara DeCosta-Hayes, Lincoln - Also a member of the gold winning women's ice hockey team at the 1998 Olympics in Nagano, Japan.

    Michael Barrowman - Born in Paraguay, he moved to Rhode Island as a child and took up swimming. Awarded a gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain for the 200-meter breaststroke, where he set a world record.
