Providence police say 2 men working at night got into a fight and 1 ended up dead

PROVIDENCE – A 51-year-old man is dead and another man is in custody after police say an argument turned violent and he pulled a gun.

Officers responded around 1 a.m. Saturday to the Walmart parking lot at 51 Silver Spring St. to a reported shooting and found a 51-year-old man with a gunshot wound inside the store, according to Providence police .

The alleged shooter was taken in to custody and transported to police headquarters for questioning, as were witnesses at the scene, Maj. David Lapatin said.

Rescue crews took the 51-year-old man to Rhode Island Hospital , where he was pronounced dead, the police said.

Lapatin said the two men – who were out-of-state contractors working on the store floors – got into an argument and threw punches before the alleged shooter retrieved a gun and fired it.

The investigation is ongoing.
