PROVIDENCE – If you're among the residents who received a property tax bill with a due date that's already passed, don't panic – you've got an extension.

The deadline to make payments has been extended to Aug. 16, according to Josh Estrella, a spokesman for Mayor Brett Smiley.

Originally, first-quarter tax payments were due July 24. But many residents didn't receive a bill in the mail until days later.

"Brett Smiley promised to make Providence the best-run city in America," state Sen. Samuel Bell, D-Providence, wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter. "He also mailed out tax bills with a due date of July 24 that arrived after July 24. Mine was postmarked July 22. I’ve requested that he publicly apologize."

Why were Providence tax bills mailed so late?

Estrella said passage of the city budget for the new fiscal year, which began July 1, "was delayed by a week this year following negotiations with the City Council."

"Given this delay, and the impact of the national software outage earlier this month, the printing process for this year’s first-quarter property tax bills was delayed, resulting in tax bills being mailed out later than usual," he wrote in an email.

However, the ability to view and pay tax bills online was not affected by the delay, he said.

On X, Bell said that he's asked for an "urgent mailing" to let people know about the new due date.

Estrella said that the city has notified residents about the deadline extension "on our website, via email and through PVD 311 notifications and on social media."
