PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence apartment building that provides affordable housing to seniors and people with disabilities is receiving a $302,106 federal grant for “some new money-saving and eco-friendly upgrades.”

Sen. Jack Reed announced the funding last week, explaining that the money is coming from the Inflation Reduction Act through its Green and Resilient Retrofit Program (GRRP).

Reed said the non-profit developer Preservation of Affordable Housing (POAH) will use the funding to look into energy efficient renovations to improve air quality and HVAC upgrades at Pocasset Manor.

The improvements to the Olneyville building are supposed to be better for the environment and much more cost effective.

“This is good news for the residents of Pocasset Manor and taxpayers alike because it supports improvements that will reduce utility costs and enhance living conditions while contributing to the state’s broader environmental sustainability goals,” Reed said.

GRRP also offers loans for affordable housing projects to implement climate resilient improvements like tackling energy and water efficiency, as well as making homes weatherproof.

In addition to Pocasset Manor, Hillside Village Apartments and Hillcrest Village Apartments will both be receiving multi-million dollar loans for energy-efficient renovations.

Reed said the award recipients must “commit to achieving recognized green certifications.”
