I'm not a resident of your town, so may I suggest you do it anyway. In Los Angeles, a guerrilla artist amended a traffic freeway sign ( the I-5) to correctly reflect a freeway interchange. His work was so good it went unnoticed for years, then upon discovery was taken down and, of course, using state sanctioned signage was reapplied with his correction. I say go for it.
