Power outages and storm damage in Pryor cause issues across major highway

PRYOR, Okla. — Residents in Pryor woke up to power outages and damage Wednesday morning following a storm, causing issues across Highway 69.

The storms hit Pryor Creek around 7:30 a.m. when a substation went out, causing major outages across the area.

Pryor Police Chief Jeremy Cantrell spoke about the damage, outages and the issues it’s causing across the highway.

"A lot of tree damage, power lines down, stop lights out, the road crossing arms went down, so we're starting to have some major issues in town as far as traffic goes on highway 69," Cantrell said.

Those in Pryor Creek that woke up without power are also dealing with storm damage.

Travis Kirby from Pryor woke up to no power and his firework stand in shambles.

"I was here in a camper and the camper was moving around. All the power went out. It got crazy for a little bit," Kirby said.

Chief Cantrell said Highway 69 is the major highway through town, so it can be stressful dealing with issues on the road, especially as a small department.

"That's our major through town, so calling people out, getting officers on the street to help out, the fire department, everybody on the ground to get people safely through those intersections is the main thing," Cantrell said.

Chief Cantrell said all of the stoplights and crossings should be working. Most power is restored, but they're still working to get some parts of Pryor’s power back.
