What to know about 'Fiesta in Pueblo'

In "Fiesta in Pueblo," Polis and Heffner feast on everything from hot chicken to Ramen, roast beef and ice cream sundaes. Their discussion dives into issues related to electric vehicles , Elon Musk, the housing crisis , marijuana legalization, sports, tech monopolies and more.

"When you start talking about crises for years and decades, you would think the housing crisis is going to be one of a century … We talked about that. I think that's one of the most important things on the minds of voters, I would imagine, in Pueblo and across the state," Heffner told the Chieftain .

"Fiesta in Pueblo" was filmed in May 2023, days after Fuel & Iron opened on April 24 . More than a year after filming, Heffner told the Chieftain that he felt the creation of the food hall was a "novel act" bringing a concept from urban areas to a city that is "not one of skyscrapers."

"(Polis), I think understood that we wanted to see a side of Colorado that was more pluralistic and diverse," Heffner said. "That food hall really captures what Colorado has become. It's not a coastal state, but it has been where so many people have descended from the coast and also other parts of the heartland."

Historic preservation: New Deal-era tennis clubhouse in Pueblo faces demolition. Some are fighting to save it.

Other topics of discussion that arose from Heffner's meeting with Polis included population growth in Colorado and efforts to create modern infrastructure that is "accountable" and not "pricing people out," whether they are lifelong residents or newcomers, Heffner said.

Other episodes from Season 2 of "Breaking Bread with Alexander" will include interviews with Alaska Sen. Lisa Murkowski, Kansas Sen. Jerry Moran, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen among others.

"For both Season 1 and 2, I thought about figures who uplift our democracy; figures who do engage in that soul searching, dialogue across difference and that are not not afraid to hear counter perspectives on any given issue," Heffner said.

Eric Maruyama, a spokesperson from Gov. Polis' office, shared a statement with the Chieftain about 'Fiesta in Pueblo' and the governor's visit to Fuel & Iron.

"It's no secret Governor Polis loves Pueblo, from the people and the history to the superior Pueblo Chile, which is why he launched both his initial campaign for governor as well as his reelection campaign in Pueblo. Governor Polis enjoyed his conversation over the amazing food at Fuel and Iron in Pueblo, has tried all of the kitchens there, and looks forward to seeing the episode when it airs,” the statement reads.
