According to a surprising new report, Prince Harry could be considering a return to the U.K. to attend the funeral of his uncle Robert Fellowes, but only under one condition: if things can remain drama-free.

According to The Daily Beast , a former friend of Prince Harry's shared, “The death will be a huge blow to the Spencer family. In normal times it would be unimaginable that Harry would not be there... Of course he would want to be there... But these are not normal times and it may well be that everyone feels Harry’s attendance would just create too much drama. It will be very sad for him if he can’t make it.”

And per The New York Post , Harry's friend said this return will only occur “if it doesn’t cause too much drama.”

Lord Fellowes, who was married to Princess Diana ’s sister, Lady Jane Fellowes, and served as Queen Elizabeth II ’s private secretary, passed away from “undisclosed causes” on July 29 at the age of 82, according to an obituary published in the U.K.’s The Times on July 31.

Since receiving the news, the Duke of Sussex, 39, is said to have been in contact with his aunt, cousins and late mother’s brother, Charles Spencer, Us Weekly reports.

Spencer, 60, honored his late brother-in-law on social media.

“My absolutely exceptional brother-in-law, Robert, is no longer with us,” he wrote on X alongside a photo of The Times obituary. “A total gentleman - in all the best meanings of that word - he was a man of humour, wisdom & utter integrity. I’m deeply proud to have been his brother-in-law.”

Earlier this summer, Prince Harry discussed his concerns about returning to the U.K. with his wife Meghan Markle. In the documentary Tabloids on Trial , which exposes the illegal techniques used by some journalists, Harry expressed his fears for Meghan’s safety .

“Look at what has happened in the last four years to me, my wife and my family,” he said. “It’s still dangerous. And all it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff, to act on what they have read… whether it’s a knife or acid, whatever it is. And these are things that are a genuine concern for me. It’s one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife back to this country.”

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex relocated to California in June 2020 and no longer maintain an official residence in the U.K. While Prince Harry has returned several times since, including for his father's coronation in May 2023, Meghan has only made a few visits, with her most recent being for Queen Elizabeth's funeral in September 2022.
