3 Key Makeup Lessons Women Over 50 Can Learn from Duchess Sophie
By Jenny Jin,

If you’re looking to the Royal Family for fashion inspiration, Duchess Sophie of Edinburgh is definitely one to watch. From the baby blue Roland Mouret maxi dress she wore to the Royal Garden Party last month to the stunning sheer gown she donned for the Royal Ascot in June, Sophie blends classic and contemporary brands in a way that’s accessible for everyday folks like us. As our very own Royals expert and Senior Director of Special Projects Rachel Bowie explains, “Sophie seems well-rounded. She’s not a try-hard but she puts in effort. I think that’s what makes her more relatable.”
Another thing we appreciate about the Duchess (who, BTW, is married to Prince Edward, the youngest sibling of King Charles III) : She has a signature makeup look that plays up her features and plays well with her sartorial choices. Ahead, three makeup lessons we’ve learned from observing Duchess Sophie that any woman over 50 (or any age, for that matter) could easily incorporate into their routine.
1. Keep a Light Base

As Bowie points out, “In all the photos I’ve seen of Sophie, I’ve noticed that her skin is always very natural looking. I can see her freckles and sunspots show through, which is refreshing because that’s something we’re often told to cover up.”
Indeed, easing up on your foundation is a smart move in general, but especially so for aging skin because heavy makeup is more prone to settling into fine lines and creases. To even out your complexion without masking it in makeup, try using a lightweight liquid foundation or a tinted moisturizer and make sure to apply it from the center of your face, blending outwards.
2. Always Wear a Lip Color

“A peachy-pink lip is Sophie’s signature,” says Bowie. After scrolling through the archives, it’s true, the Duchess of Edinburgh seems to take a shine to this particular hue. Not so bright that it makes its own statement, but just vibrant enough to brighten up her complexion, a peachy-pink lip can be flattering on all skin tones because it has both warm and cool undertones to it.
3. Play Up Your Eyes

When it’s time to turn things up a notch, Duchess Sophie plays up her eyes. Keeping her base makeup light and paired with her signature peachy-pink lip, she adds a dash of black eyeliner and generously coats her lashes with mascara to really emphasize her blue eyes.
