When it comes to decisions about how to dress, Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh —and King Charles’s sister-in-law—has certainly been influencing my attire. From her cornflower blue coat to a breezy shirtdress , I can’t help but keep tabs on her royal style, which continues to feel as attainable as it is effortless. The most recent example of this is not only fall-friendly, it features key pieces that are easy to emulate: An oversize blazer (like this one from Tuckernuck , $298) over a dress (say, this one from Old Navy , $50).
Note: In the carousel above, you’ll have to swipe to see, but Sophie—who is spending the final days of summer in Scotland with the royal family—popped up at the Edinburgh International Festival alongside her husband, Prince Edward, wearing a “uniform” that is fast becoming her signature look for fall.
The style recipe is this: Stunning dress (for this particular event, Sophie added a belt) with an oversize blazer draped over her shoulders on top. It’s pretty and polished, but more importantly, super functional. In fact, there’s a capsule wardrobe appeal of a blazer in a darker hue that you can throw on over anything—a dress, denim, even a midi skirt.

Still, Sophie has long relied on this combination—as pictured above at the Royal Windsor Horse Show this past spring. Even more interesting, this is the second time this week that Sophie has paired a dress and blazer together. She was spotted—again, with Prince Edward— bopping around Edinburgh . This time, she wore the same blazer, but a different dress, which is now sold out from ME+EM . ( Similar here , $245 ; $123.) You can almost picture the simplicity of her suitcase, right? To mirror her look, we pulled a few pieces below.
Again, it’s the ease of the outfit that’s most appealing to me. Fall is busy. I want something in my closet that I can easily mix and match to create a variety of looks a la Sophie. An oversize blazer in a neutral color (could be navy, could be black) and a few dresses in a longer length is just the ticket.
The credit goes to Sophie, who continues to provide non-stop style inspo.
