Two things I’ve always loved? Spicy food and fast food . So, when Burger King released its limited-time Fiery Menu , a lineup of five new items that puts heat front and center, I knew I had to taste it from start to finish. The items range from usual suspects, like burgers and chicken sandwiches , to an unexpected swicy soda. Plus, each one clocks in at a different heat intensity, so there’s something for every palate. But which are worth the spend? I tasted all five offerings to find out. Read on for my honest reviews.

    5. Fiery Mozzarella Fries

    • What’s in It: fry-shaped mozzarella sticks filled with cheese and peppers and coated in Fiery Calabrian pepper breading
    • Spice Level: 2/5
    • Price: $2.49/four-piece

Visually, these (somewhat) remind me of a smaller version of the viral Nashville Hot Mozz from Chili’s . The vibrant, crimson-colored breading led me to believe these were going to be spicier than they were. (In fact, they’re much redder than the Fiery Chicken Fries.) A warning, though: Eat these ASAP— instead of once you get home from the drive-thru—because the cheese turns rubbery as soon as it begins to cool. Available in four, eight and 12 pieces, these come with a dip cup of Hidden Valley Ranch, but I don’t think it adds much.

    4. Fiery Bacon Whopper

    • What’s in It: ¼-pound flame-grilled beef, Fiery-seasoned bacon, pepper jack cheese, tomatoes, lettuce and creamy Fiery sauce on a toasted sesame seed bun
    • Spice Level: 3/5
    • Price: $7.79

BK turned up the heat on its signature burger. The bacon has a hot honey-like quality, but I found its texture to be excessively stringy (I say that as someone who prefers very crispy bacon). The Fiery sauce is nice too, delivering medium spice and a hint of smoke. I found my lips tingling the more I ate, so I’d say the sauce has a pleasant, creeping heat. The pepper jack cheese imparts more creaminess than spice IMO. TLDR: It’s OK, but I’ll stick to my usual Whopper Jr. with cheese and add my own hot sauce at home.

    3. Fiery Bacon Royal Crispy Chicken Sandwich

    • What’s in It: crispy white meat breast filet coated with Fiery glaze and topped with Fiery-seasoned bacon, pepper jack cheese, tomato, lettuce and creamy Fiery sauce on a toasted sesame seed bun
    • Spice Level: 5/5
    • Price: $7.49

Beware: This handheld is decidedly messy. But don’t let that deter you from its sweet-and-spicy splendor. The glaze is the best part, and I kind of wish it could take the spotlight with the crispy chicken without getting lost in the Fiery sauce. Three bites in and I was definitely feeling the 5/5 spice level. But I’d love to try this one with pickles in place of tomatoes and maybe even plain mayo instead of the Fiery sauce; it would offer some bright acidity and better balance to it.

    2. Fiery Strawberry & Sprite

    • What’s in It: Sprite, Fiery strawberry purée
    • Spice Level: 1/5
    • Price: $2.79

The swicy trend is nothing new. Even Starbucks launched a spicy lemonade earlier this year. So as strange as this soda may seem, it’s super timely. The strawberry flavor is candy-like without being too sweet—granted, it’s still a Sprite. As for the heat, this soda is a little tingly going down (think of a mild jalapeño margarita ), but it’s just generically spicy without having a specific flavor. Even so, it was surprisingly enjoyable.

    1. Fiery Chicken Fries

    • What’s in It: white meat Chicken Fries marinated with Fiery seasoning and coated in garlic and pepper breading
    • Spice Level: 4/5
    • Price: $1.99/four-piece

At first, I was disappointed in the heat, considering these are the second hottest offering on the menu. But as you snack on them, the heat builds on your tongue and lips, so just be patient. They’re crispy, filling and irresistibly poppable, and taste similar to Wendy’s spicy nuggets, only with more crunch. The Chicken Fries come in four-, eight- and 12-piece boxes (which may be of varying sizes, if your order comes out like mine). The Hidden Valley Ranch tastes better paired with these than with the mozzarella , and I bet it’d be more so if the dressing were cold.
