These Two Broadway Shows Are So Good I Had to See Them Twice

Broadway is about to debut a plethora of new shows as the fall 2024 season begins. I’m personally most excited for Death Becomes Her , based on the Meryl Streep/Goldie Hawn film (I think I’d have my gay card revoked if I weren’t able to quote this movie at the drop of a hat).
However, just because there are a bunch of flashy new options arriving doesn’t mean we should forget about the gems from previous seasons. Sure, fans are still flocking to Lion King and Book of Mormon , but I’m personally still hung up on two long-ish running musicals that I’ve seen twice (so far). These must-see options? Six and & Juliet .

Six comes to us by way of the West End. This fab and fun musical—which took home the Tony for Best Original Score—opened on Broadway in late 2021 (previews began in 2020, which is when I first saw it, but the opening was postponed due to the pandemic). And when I say fans are obsessed with this show, believe me, that’s an understatement. People leapt to their feet so fast following the final number that I was left wondering if it was a “friends and family night” (it wasn’t).
The six-person (get it?) musical follows the wives of Henry VIII, aka the monarch best known for divorcing and beheading a startling number of his wives. The twist here? Henry’s six wives are now pop icons telling their stories through song in the form of a one-night-only concert. The music is super catchy. The performances are incredible. The “concert” makes you want to dance and sing along (the girl sitting next to you will be singing along, so try not to get annoyed). And the best part? The whole thing clocks in at only 80 minutes.
If a musical about history sounds dull, let me assure you that the history portion takes a backseat to the music and entertainment here. As I mentioned, the show was so good I made sure to see it a second time (and I would absolutely see it twice more).

Speaking of shows I’ve seen twice, make sure you get tickets to see another West End transfer, & Juliet .
This show picks up at the conclusion of Romeo and Juliet and asks the question, “What if Juliet lived?” The sequel to a Shakespearean tragedy might not sound like a fun night out, but this version pairs the totally original story with songs from some of today’s biggest pop icons. The cast wows with flashy numbers by Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry , Céline Dion and more.
The performances are high energy and big budget. But even more than that, it’s an interesting story where the pop songs weave nicely into the plot and drive it forward (rather than distract from it like in a number of other jukebox musicals). And unlike the source material, the genre is more romantic comedy than it is tragedy, leading to an enjoyable night that the whole family can enjoy.
