The clothes, the romances, the supposed daily job responsibilities—they’re over the top in all the best ways and allow us all to play out our fantasies of being an expat marketing exec with seemingly no budget. And while you could always plan a trip to Paris to live out your Emily-inspired dreams, there is another option that doesn’t involve a lengthy flight and PTO. You could always raid Emily Cooper and the gang’s wardrobes to copy the very best of their handbag collections. Because while it’s unlikely I’ll ever have occasion to wear a black-and-white striped, long-sleeve body suit or a Muppet-inspired faux-fur coat , I can absolutely accessorize my day-to-day looks with a fabulous new tote or crossbody. I even love her choice to pair it with a sherpa coat for double the coziness.
Even in Italy, Emily is repping France with her YSL handbag. The combination of leather and raffia make it so you could carry this bag for many more months out of the year than a plain straw crossbody. It’s definitely an investment piece, but this timeless style is worth the splurge, in my opinion, for its versatility.
I love when characters of a show repeat outfits, and this bag shows up at least twice in Season 4. Sylvie also carries the very same style in a different color in Season 3, making this a fabulously chic three-peat. This is a classic Pierre Hardy silhouette, and comes in a range of fun color combinations. It also comes with a removable strap to convert the top handle to a crossbody for even more wear options. C’est très magnifique!
A classic carryall tote is a must have for any capsule wardrobe, but that doesn’t mean you’re required to stick with simple black leather. Sylvie’s stunning brown woven tote is super sleek, but not at all boring, and I love that it comes with so much built-in structure. There’s an inner zippered pocket running down the middle compartment so you can organize your daily needs into two open slots, and those gold bag charms are super trendy right now (although you can also remove them, if you prefer).
No need to wear your heart on your sleeve when you can wear it strapped across your torso instead. The combo of the bold-colored plaid plus the heart shape, and of course the iconic Viviene Westwood logo, is a lot for one mini purse. But it works precisely because of the petite size. This is a bag that’s meant to feel like fun, meaning you can pair it with other cheeky pieces just like Ms. Cooper or use it to dress up a basic tee and jeans.
Leave it to Sylvie to make a leather crossbody feel fresh and new. The vertical shape and gold hardware give this Tod’s design a utilitarian vibe that’s elevated with the smooth leather and impeccable stitching. Plus, it also comes with a shoulder strap if that’s more your vibe. Right now, Sylvie’s beautiful green hue appears to be out of stock, but fingers crossed it makes a comeback in the (very) near future.
Why settle for a basic black shoulder bag when you could have one with a faux-fur trim? I love that this baguette style looks so low-key at first glance, but becomes more and more interesting the more you study it. Plus, the brand, Ozias, handmakes each bag to order at a workshop in Paris, giving a truly authentic and unique French feel. Just please skip pairing it with a black beret.
As impractical as Emily’s clothing choice often are, Mindy’s are on a whole other level. Case in point, this stunning architectural wonder by designer Thaden. The accordion-folded leather is accented with brass hardware and there is both a top handle and a crossbody strap. Does it hold a ton? No. Is it worth it just for the constant barrage of “oh my god, where did you get that? It’s gorgeous!” that will inevitably come your way? Mindy would say absolutely yes.
