3 position groups on the Vikings that need added depth
The Vikings are just over two months away from playing actual football games. We are officially in the slowest part of the offseason, as OTAs and mandatory minicamp are now behind us. Now, we await training camp and the preseason before the regular season finally kicks off on September 8.
Vikings listed among ‘least improved’ teams for 2024
One NFL insider is not keen on the Minnesota Vikings’ offseason, calling the team one of the league’s “least improved” during the offseason. Recently, the staff over at Sports Illustrated’s MMQB revealed which NFL teams they believe improved the least this offseason. Unfortunately for Vikings fans, one of these analysts decided to pick the purple and gold.
The Hall Of Fame Series: Fran Tarkenton
Not many players in the history of the Minnesota Vikings stack up as well as quarterback Fran Tarkenton. Coming off the bench in the first game in team history to help upset the established and respected Chicago Bears, Tarkenton endeared himself to Vikings fans from the start. His frenetic play style brought excitement to a team stuck in the same division as powerhouses like the Bears, the Green Bay Packers, and the Baltimore Colts.
Vikings’ New DL Coach Hypes Lean, Locked-In, 295-Pound Defender
Think Jerry Tillery is going to make Minnesota look smart for the prove-it deal? The Vikings’ new DL coach may agree. Marcus Dixon took some time for the media at the end of May. While answering questions, Dixon came around to Tillery, a 3T/5T who was a 1st-Round selection back in 2019. The coach thinks that good things are in store for the defender while describing some of the attributes that will lead to success.
Vikings’ Vigorous Competition at TE to Result in a Crowded Roster Spot
Prior to training camp, I’ll be working through a position-by-position roster projection. The third installment in the series is going to consider the tight end spot. The Vikings’ vigorous competition at tight end largely flows from the absence of T.J. Hockenson, the TE1 who is capable of playing at an All Pro level. He is recovering from a serious knee injury and the word is that he’ll need to miss some time at the beginning of the season. The end result has been to increase the amount of players competing at the position.
The Vikings Have Set their Window
Earlier in the offseason, Kwesi Adofo-Mensah acknowledged that the 2024 offseason always looked like a major transitional moment. His actions point toward the next phase opening up. Ideally, the Vikings are going to use the 2024 season as the on-ramp toward a contention highway running from (roughly) 2025-28. Why those...
The View from VT: Diggs with a Bizarre Theory, Risner Right, and McAfee’s QB Plan
Vikings Territory works in partnership with PurplePTSD, similarly doing their utmost to put forth excellent Minnesota Vikings content. As a result, we promote what they have to offer in “The View from VT,” a weekly piece. Take a look at five of their articles from the past week.
Young Vikings Pass Catcher Gets “Clean Up on His Knee”
The competition at tight end is growing increasingly intense. T.J. Hockenson is recovering, so the approach has been to really beef up the depth. Well, there could be another reason for making such a concerted effort to increase the competition since a young Vikings pass catcher is also ailing. Per Kevin O’Connell, depth tight end Nick Muse has had to have a minor surgery to get himself back to full health.
Kevin O’Connell (Sort Of) Names the Vikings’ QB1
As expected, Sam Darnold is the leader to be the Week 1 starter. On Wednesday, Kevin O’Connell spoke with the Minnesota media. O’Connell, as per usual, was chatty, venturing into a variety of topics across roughly 17 minutes of press conference time. When things came around to Darnold and the QB hierarchy, the head coach confirmed that the veteran journeyman is sitting in the top spot.
Vikings Coach Talks About Secret to Brian Flores’ Scheme
Is the key that it’s not really a scheme? Or, at least, not one in a traditional sense?. Vikings coach Marcus Dixon is now in charge of the defensive line. While chatting with the media, Dixon had plenty of good things to say about his new boss, defensive coordinator Brian Flores. Dixon explained that the scheme is unique insofar as it resists easy characterizations while pointing toward an ingredient that helps make the defense so potent.
Vikings Veteran Says Upside Rookie is “Factory Made”
Count Vikings veteran Jonathan Greenard among those who think Dallas Turner has some tremendous potential. The former Texan spoke with the media not too long ago, moving through a variety of topics. One of the ideas that came up was in regards to Mr. Turner, the rookie edge rusher who was scooped up at No. 17 after Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s bold trade up the board. Greenard described Turner as being “factory made.”
Kirk Cousins Tampering Investigation Ends with Falcons Having “Improper Contact”
Well, there’s no direct benefit to the Vikings in the Kirk Cousins tampering investigation. ESPN’s Adam Schefter provides the update: “NFL ruled the Falcons had improper contact with prospective unrestricted free agents Kirk Cousins, Darnell Mooney, and Charlie Woerner during the two-day negotiating period prior to the start of the 2024 League Year.”
In Response to Adversity, Vikings Have Supercharged a Specific Position
The Vikings have supercharged the tight end position. They’ve done so largely as a result of the T.J. Hockenson injury. When available, Hockenson is a game-changing tight end. He is capable of doing damage in the intermediate area of the field and he functions as a nice complement to the recently-extended Justin Jefferson. Prior to going down to injury, Hockenson’s numbers were soaring toward notable highs. He was sitting on 95 catches, 960 yards, and 5 touchdowns. How does Minnesota replace that production in the opening weeks of the season?
Vikings to Proceed with a Lean Operation at Running Back
Prior to training camp, I’ll be working through a position-by-position roster projection. Second in the series is a consideration of a sneaky important spot for the Vikings: running back. The quarterback position has some certainty and uncertainty to navigate. Regardless of who is throwing the ball, getting production on...
A Pair of FA Fits for the Vikings as the NFL Offseason Hits the Quiet Period
According to Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, building a roster is eternal. Even in the slower portion of the year, there’s a desire for ongoing improvement, making the FA fits for the Vikings an ongoing topic of interest. To that end, there are still some notable free agents who have the capacity...
Vikings Rumors: No Great Guards, TE Extravaganza, and Defeating the Horror Monster
Since we’re officially into the portion of the year when Vikings rumors are arriving fast and furious, we’ll be highlighting some of the purple rumblings. The “Vikings Rumor Wrangle” is a series that keeps readers informed on what’s being whispered about in Vikings Land. In this iteration, we discuss the Vikings not having great guards, the tight end position getting a ton of attention, and the horror monster always coming back.
Kevin O’Connell Looks to Give Vikings Rumor a Knockout Punch
The Vikings are going to trade Justin Jefferson if an extension doesn’t get done soon. Or, at least, that was the theory among some leading up to the news of the extension. Jefferson isn’t going anywhere. In fact, Kevin O’Connell was sure to clarify that point once again...
A Step Back? Vikings’ Edge Rushers Have Much to Prove
If the Vikings’ edge rushers don’t play top-tier football, Brian Flores’ defense is unlikely to become a top-10 group. PFF has been working through a top 32 positional rankings recently and their assessment of Minnesota’s edge rusher spot brings the issue to the fore. Andrew Van Ginkel comes in at 24th in their ranking and Jonathan Greenard sees his name at 30th. Are these rankings accurate? If so, will the tandem be good enough to take Minnesota where it wants to go?
We Now Know One Reason Why the Justin Jefferson Extension Took So Long to Get Done
A little over a week ago, Justin Jefferson officially made a massive decision for the Minnesota Vikings. The star receiver signed a four-year contract worth $140 million. The deal made Jefferson the highest-paid non-QB in NFL history on an average annual value basis, earning him $35 million per year. It also includes $110 million in guarantees, far exceeding any other WR contract.
Well-Paid UDFA Receiver Looking to Fill Open Spot in Vikings’ WR Competition
Recently, Dustin Baker discussed a couple of the well-paid UDFA players in a piece for Vikings Territory. The talented edge rusher Gabriel Murphy gets a lot of the focus, but then the conversation shifts over to a more overlooked name: Jeshaun Jones. Per Over the Cap, the pass catcher is...
