Ranking the 10 Best Vikings Entering the 2024 Season
Coming off a 7-10 season without an appearance in the playoffs, and after losing the two four-time Pro Bowlers Kirk Cousins and Danielle Hunter in free agency, one would think the Vikings don’t have any high-end talent. But one look at the roster can drastically change that opinion. Who...
The Complete Vikings Defense Roster Projection Before Training Camp
The Vikings defense is supposed to take a major step forward in 2024. For the most part, Brian Flores did tremendous work in Year 1 as the DC. True, there were rough stretches at the beginning and end of the season, but Flores still pushed his crew to 13th best in the NFL for points allowed. He did so with a cluster of talent that was pretty average and no shortage of injury trouble. The group below looks more formidable. Consider who I think will make the final roster (or, at least, who I foresee making the roster before training camp and the preseason).
A Vikings Depth Chart as Training Camp Nears
It’s training camp month (better known as July). As a result, it’s time for a fresh Vikings depth chart. The Vikings’ GM — Mr. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah — understands that tinkering with a roster is eternal. He is constantly searching for ways to improve even as there’s patience with the players currently in-house. Some of the names below will be new but there’s a lot of carry over.
A Trade Is the Last Chance to Save Face for Vikings’ GM
The 2022 draft class has been one of the worst in franchise history, at least so far. Of course, sometimes decent players emerge a few years after their entry into the league, so there should still be some caution. Ed Ingram has become a solid guard for the Vikings, and barring a surprise demotion, he will remain in the starting unit.
Vikings Schedule Features 5 Revenge Games
The schedule release is a big deal in the dead part of the offseason. Folks analyze every little aspect and detail and then forget about it for a few months until the season begins. The Minnesota Vikings will open their 2024 journey on September 8, pursuing a postseason bid after one year without any extra games.
What if Minnesota Passed on J.J. McCarthy in the 2024 NFL Draft?
If there are more universes than the one we currently reside in, and the theory that there are an infinite number of universes out there, then in at least one of them, the Minnesota Vikings didn’t select J.J. McCarthy in the 2024 NFL Draft. There are probably many more where the Vikings don’t take a quarterback whatsoever.
Will the Vikings Regret Not Landing the Big Fish in Free Agency?
No doubt, Minnesota put in work back in March, welcoming a pile of new players who should make a positive difference. Among these players are EDGE Jonathan Greenard, EDGE Andrew Van Ginkel, RB Aaron Jones, LB Blake Cashman, and CB Shaq Griffin. Oh, and a new QB1 in Sam Darnold (at least for 2024).
The View from VT: Cutting an RB, a Rim-Rattling Trade, and J.J. McCarthy Plot Twist
Vikings Territory works in partnership with PurplePTSD, similarly doing their utmost to put forth excellent Minnesota Vikings content. As a result, we promote what they have to offer in “The View from VT,” a weekly piece. Take a look at five of their articles from the past week.
Buy or Sell: Weekly Vikings Rumors
The offseason is the time for heavy speculation in the NFL landscape. Did the Vikings get better or worse? Can free agent signing Jonathan Greenard replace Danielle Hunter? Does rookie J.J. McCarthy redshirt his debut season, and if so, how well does Sam Darnold play after six stumbling seasons? As we’re nearing the end of those debates with the arrival of training camp, let’s take a look at the weekly rumor mill.
Vikings Defender Demands More Respect
The 2023 Vikings finished with a disappointing 7-10 record, but the season still featured some exciting storylines. Joshua Dobbs and his short-lived heroics were just as fun to watch as Ivan Pace’s emergence as a three-down linebacker. Jordan Addison didn’t take long to establish himself as a solid wingman for Justin Jefferson.
Where the Rubber Meets the Road for Kirk Cousins
Kirk Cousins was the quarterback in Minnesota for six seasons. Recently, he decided to jump ship and head southward, trading in his horns for wings. He’ll be the Falcons’ QB for the next four seasons after agreeing to a four-year pact that promises to offer $180 million. Or...
One Viking Reportedly Had an “Incredible Offseason”
Sophomore jumps are common in the NFL. Justin Jefferson started hot with 1,400 yards in his debut season but tallied 1,616 yards in his second campaign (in one more game). Almost a decade ago, Stefon Diggs increased his yards per game from 55.4 as a rookie to 69.5 in his second season in 2016.
Vikings Training Camp Sneak Peek: Wide Receivers
The 2024 version of Vikings training camp kicks off on July 21 with the arrival of the rookies and some select veterans. All remaining players show up at TCO Performance Center two days later. The fans can attend practices starting on July 27 to watch the players compete for roster spots on roles within the lineup.
Almost Certainly, Adam Thielen Isn’t Coming Back. However…
Lately, there has been a fair bit of Adam Thielen chatter on Vikings Territory (we here at P/PTSD are in cahoots with the fine folks at VT). Not too long ago, the Minnesota legend worked out with J.J. McCarthy, the No. 10 pick from the 2024 NFL Draft who is being entrusted with taking over as the Vikings’ QB1 before too long. Thielen tossed praise in McCarthy’s direction — a consistent theme for the offseason has been praise for McCarthy — while fans dreamed about seeing the pair put in work on an actual NFL field.
Projecting The Vikings’ Starting Lineup for Week 1
The Vikings’ starting lineup is a bit of a moving target. In mid-July, there’s a ton that can change between now and the opening contest against the New York Giants (Sunday, September 8th — less than two months away). Injuries are an unfortunate part of football and there’s a ton of competing that still needs to happen. Even still, we can make a pretty strong educated guess, so let’s give it a whirl on a pre-training camp basis.
1 Vikings Unit Isn’t a Concern Anymore
A running joke in the Vikings’ community is that the team is always drafting cornerbacks in the first round. Indeed, there have been some big investments at that spot. Even after fielding an elite defense in 2017, general manager Rick Spielman added first-rounder Mike Hughes. He joined former first-rounders Trae Waynes and Xavier Rhodes. In 2020, Jeff Gladney was selected 31st overall.
NFL Insider Weighs in on Vikings QB Competition
Training camp is right around the corner for the Minnesota Vikings. The rookies will report to TCO Performance Center on July 21st, while the veterans get two more vacation days. In the last few years, starting passer Kirk Cousins would generally arrive with the first-year players to have a headstart in preparing for the upcoming season.
One Splashy Vikings Trade Idea Makes the Rounds
Trading has been one of Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s favorite actions since he took over the franchise in 2022. Some failed, but general manager has also pulled off some successful trades, such as acquiring tight end T.J. Hockenson, and he has been aggressive in the draft this season, trading up for both first-rounders J.J. McCarthy and Dallas Turner. Whether those two deals were good moves or not depends on their development.
How Secure is Dalton Risner’s Roster Spot?
For a little while, it looked like Minnesota was moving on from Dalton Risner. The left guard got added during the 2023 season and became a starter after Ezra Cleveland got hurt. In fact, Minnesota was so content with the play offered by Mr. Risner that Cleveland got shipped out, sent southward to become a Jaguar before the NFL trade deadline.
