‘Horrific scene:’ Baby, 21-Year-Old Woman, and Dog Killed in Putnam County Crash
The Florida Highway Patrol says a Mastic (Long Island), New York driver was traveling south on State Road 19 approaching the Marion County Line in Putnam County, Florida near National Forest Road 74 (Ocala National Forest) when he allegedly attempted to pass a van. A baby, 21-year-old woman, and a dog were killed in the resulting crash at 11:43pm on Thursday, July 4th, 2024.

The Sportsman’s Lodge was built around 1926-27. It was a lodge mostly for fisherman to stay and then launch into the St. Johns River, drop a line and pulling in fish over days or weeks. The site was located along the eastern shore of the St. Johns River in the city of Welaka in Putnam County. This was back when fishing in Florida was king and Welaka was a far better known community.

PDN’s publishing altered due to post office closure
There will be changes to this week’s publication schedule of the Palatka Daily News because of the Fourth of July. Instead of publishing an edition Thursday, the paper will be distributed Friday. The schedule change was necessary because the U.S. Postal Service, which delivers the newspapers, will be closed Thursday in observance of Independence Day.
Wawa opens doors to hundreds of eager patrons
The Palatka Junior-Senior High School Marching Band, an oversized goose and cheery employees greeted patrons Thursday as Wawa in Palatka first opened its doors. Putnam County’s first Wawa, 625 State Road 19, opened at 8 a.m. to a line of people that wrapped around the building waiting to grab a famous Wawa hoagie, get a free cup of coffee, meet Wawa’s mascot Wally Goose or simply browse the souped-up gas station.
