BREAKING NEWS: Suspect in custody after Sparta Highway standoff
A man who barricaded himself in the attic of his house Thursday afternoon and threatened a shoot-out with law enforcement officers is now in jail and everyone is safe. Eatonton Police Chief Howell Cardwell and Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills said Sparta Highway was closed during the standoff, which ended when they entered the house in a tactical armored vehicle and used a flameless smoke grenade of tear gas.

A Celebration of Life for Robert E. “Sonny” Poole , age 88 was conducted Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 3 PM in Williams Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Larry Glover officiating. The family received friends from 2 PM until the service hour. Mr. Poole was a native and lifelong resident of Putnam County. The son of the late John Mark Poole and Mary Harper Poole and was predeceased by his son Robert E. Poole, Jr. Sonny was an avid pool player and fisherman. Sonny was known for having fun and enjoying life and he was a member of the Eatonton Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife Shirley McLeroy Poole; daughter, Scarlett Martin Goddard (Nick) of Eatonton; son, Mark L. Poole (Kim) of Stockbridge; grandchildren, Katie Lauren Murphy of Milner, Kassie McClain of Milledgeville; Noah Goddard of Eatonton, James Robert Lewis, Jr. of LA and Marky Lewis of FL. Flowers accepted or the family request donations to Animal Rescue Foundation or to GA. Sheriffs Boys Ranch.

Republican incumbent Trey Rhodes and Democrat Melanie Miller are candidates in the election for the Georgia House of Representatives District 124 on Nov. 5. Miller’s candidacy makes her the first Black woman to run for the District 124 seat, which includes parts of east Athens, Winterville, Oglethorpe County, Taliaferro County, Putnam County and Greene County.

ATLANTA — With how hot and dry June has finished, a 'flash drought' is developing across parts of Georgia. The drought expanded in north Georgia in the last week, according to the latest U.S. Drought Monitor. Knights of Columbus holds 2024 Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner
The Knights of Columbus Council 13808 held its annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner May 8 in the Christ Our King and Savior social hall. The dinner is provided to law enforcement personnel from Greene and Putnam Counties sheriff’s offices and Greensboro Police Department to show appreciation and support for the outstanding service these law enforcement agencies provide in lake country. There were 85 attendees, including 35 personnel from the Sheriffs’ and Police Departments.
