Iowans take kayaks down flooded city streets
INDIANOLA, Iowa — KCCI viewer Gentry Burton shared photos of her adult children kayaking down a flooded Indianola street this week. The Warren County town saw about 5 inches of rain Tuesday as strong storms pushed across the state. The storms prompted several tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings, as well as flooding and flash flooding in a number of areas.
Firefighter hurt in vacant factory fire while trying to find people inside
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - A firefighter was hurt fighting a fire at what was supposed to be an empty factory building Friday morning. The Cedar Rapids Fire Department says it responded to the former Diamond V plant in the 500 block of G Ave NW in Cedar Rapids before 7 Friday morning. The plant has been vacant for several years but the department says firefighters saw people evacuating as they arrived and were told people were inside. That prompted firefighters to enter the building to search for people who may be trapped.
Cedar Rapids restaurant holds 4th of July hot dog eating contest
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - On the Fourth of July in 1916, four immigrants settled their argument over who was the most patriotic with a hot dog eating contest in Coney Island. Those hot dogs were from the first Nathan’s Famous hot dog stand, who held its first-ever official hot dog eating contest in 1972.
NIACC student takes 3rd place at statewide Venture School competition
MASON CITY, Iowa – A student at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) has taken 3rd place at the 2024 University of Iowa’s Venture School Launch Day. Ten teams from across Iowa competed in the event which was held at EntreFEST, a two-day entrepreneurial conference in Cedar Rapids.
Hanson Nature Center Grand Opening Scheduled
The Winnebago County Conservation Board and the Friends of Winnebago County Conservation. have scheduled a Grand Opening for the new Hanson Nature Center! It will be held on Saturday, July 13th, from 11:00 AM until 4:00 PM at the Center, located at 41600 Highway 69, Leland, Iowa. The event will also serve as a retirement party for Winnebago County Conservation Board Director Robert Schwartz who will be retiring on July 31st.

Charles City housing project getting over $10 million in federal tax creidts
DES MOINES, Iowa – A housing development in Charles City is sharing in more than $10 million in federal housing tax credits going to 10 projects in Iowa. The Iowa Finance Authority Board of Directors says more than $10.6 million will go do build and rehab 404 affordable rental homes. The money is going to projects in Burlington, Charles City, Davenport, Des Moines, Jefferson, Knoxville, Mount Pleasant, Oskaloosa and Spirit Lake.

Chocolates sold in Iowa and eight other states are part of a massive recall due to a risk of Salmonella poisoning. Earlier this year, the U.S. Food and Drugs Administration initiated a recall on more than four million pounds of chocolate and confectionary products from Clasen Quality Chocolate in Madison, Wisconsin.
