HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — A campaign appearance for North Carolina Republican gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson also involved a protest outside the venue where it took place Thursday.

Robinson made an appearance at Northstone Country Club as part of a luncheon for the Lake Norman Chamber.

Just off the country club’s property were those who directly went after Robinson’s past statements on everything from skirt-wearing to abortion.

“It’s a multitude of things that’s he’s said that’s just not true, that he doesn’t get to make a decision on,” said Aurrita Payne with the group Unity in Community.

Payne was one of about two dozen others who held signs before the event where Robinson was the keynote speaker.

The Lake Norman Chamber had hosted Robinson’s opponent, Democratic gubernatorial candidate and current Attorney General Josh Stein, at a previous event.

Robinson indirectly referenced the things that have been said about him, and his past statements.

“They’ll tell you on television that I’m this crazy guy with two heads that’s going to scream at everybody,” said Robinson.  “Nothing could be further from the truth.”

Robinson has been taking on that perception at a time when he is trailing further in the polls.

A new Cook Political Report and BSG survey, released Thursday, showed Stein with a seven-point lead over Robinson in polling.

An analysis by Nexstar’s sister publication The Hill also noted a six-point lead in the polls by Stein against Robinson.

Robinson has lately been taking on a more direct approach to his government experience and added that his previous positions as an activist and social media influencer were for those causes.

During his speech, he laid out plans for, among other things, rehauling and modernizing state agencies and the state’s education system.

“I represent 10,000,000 people, many of whom do not agree with me,” Robinson said.  “And as an elected official, I have to be mature enough to set my opinion aside.”

Queen City News asked for an interview with Robinson but was told it would not be possible on Thursday due to time constraints.  His campaign added there was a possibility of talking to him in the future, ahead of the November election.
