CHARLOTTE ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — A west Charlotte school will have to relocate classes following flooding from a broken pipe, according to Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools.

Students at Charles H. Parker Academic Center on Walton Road were set to return to school on August 26, but they will now start classes at a different CMS campus. Officials say a pipe burst on the week of August 5, causing severe water and flooding damage and requiring substantial repairs.

For at least the first eight weeks of the school year, students will be relocated to Bruns Avenue Elementary School, which is about 3.5 miles away.

Bruns Avenue is a new facility with 45 classrooms, and school officials say there is enough room for both school bodies to fit comfortably.

The two schools will maintain their own schedules, classes, transportation and lunch periods. CMS says parents will receive status updates regularly.

Charles Parker will hold its open house on August 22 from 3-6 p.m., and Bruns Avenue will run from 4-5:30 p.m. the same day.

Bruns Avenue will run its bell schedule 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Charles Parker from 9:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Officials are asking families to only arrive 15 minutes before arrival and dismissal due to the close schedules.
