‘Happened so fast’: Storm leaves behind serious damage to Mooresville homes

MOORESVILLE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) – People living in a Mooresville neighborhood are trying to figure out how to rebuild after a storm ripped through their community.
The severe weather on Sunday night took down dozens of trees and destroyed homes on Tennessee Circle.
At least two trees fell on one home behind it, splitting the house down the middle. The good news is that no one was hurt, but it’s going to take a while to repair the damage.
“It happened so fast and so quick, just totally by surprise,” said David Mayfield, who lives on Tennessee Circle.
It was a quick storm, which left behind downed trees, yards covered in debris, and homes in need of serious repair.
“Just kind of strange,” said Mayfield. “Just a normal day outside cooking out and had a little thunderstorm. Next thing I know, just a wave of wind hit. Lasted maybe 45 seconds and by the time I got in and got to the backyard, this is what was left.”
Mayfield had two large trees fall in his front yard and half a dozen small ones come down in his backyard. He spent the day on Monday cleaning up.
“No damage to the house, though, so I’m lucky,” he said.
Some of Mayfield’s neighbors weren’t as lucky.
“Next door they had one go through their sunroom,” he said. “They’re going to probably have to move out for awhile while they repair.”
The owners of that home said they weren’t there when a tree crashed into their sunroom, leaving behind branches and glass. It’s a good thing because normally they would be sitting in the room.
A few doors down, the homeowners were home when two giant trees left their home unlivable.
“That house is probably destroyed,” said Mayfield. “It really went right through the middle of it.”
The owners were too emotional to talk but said they just closed on the house two weeks ago. No one is quite sure where to go from here, but everyone agrees – it could’ve been much worse.
“Count your blessings because you never know,” said Mayfield. “You never know.”
Crews have been out clearing debris and removing trees from the homes and will be in the coming days.
