CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A 3-year-old was seriously injured after being attacked by a dog in northeast Charlotte Monday, officers say.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, Animal Care and Control officers responded to an attack call around 8:50 a.m. Aug. 19 in the 5400 block of Cameron Commons Parkway, off N.C. Hwy. 49.

CMPD’s University City Division officers and Medic were already on scene.

Officers say their investigation indicates that a group of children were in the front yard playing when three dogs owned by the victim’s family were let out of the garage. Two of the dogs playfully knocked the victim to the ground when the third dog approached and began to bite the victim and dragged them down the driveway.

Several adult witnesses ran toward the child and attempted to stop the attack. Two of them fired gunshots near the dog. As a result, the canine retreated into the garage.

Medic transported the victim to Atrium Health CMC with serious injuries.

The dog was surrendered to Animal Care and Control by its owner. The canine will be held for a 10-day rabies quarantine, after which it will be euthanized.

To ensure the safety of young children around dogs, police encourage parents and guardians to closely supervise their children.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
