UNION COUNTY, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Union County Public Schools is one of the fastest-growing districts in the greater Charlotte area.

Census data shows that Union County is one of the fastest-growing counties in the state, and its population grew about 19% from 2010 to 2020. It is predicted to grow by about another 20% in the next 10 years.

The district superintendent says the expansion has leveled off a bit over the past four or five years, but they’re starting to see the demographics change rapidly including many new families from Ukraine and Russia.

“The changes are still coming. You look around this county and developments are being built all over the place. Our facilities team is doing a really good job of proactively identifying where we need to move families before homes are built in terms of relocating their attendance zone, but again, we welcome all of our families to Union County, and we’re glad that they’ve chosen to be in our great school system.”

Construction crews are currently building two new schools set to open next fall: East Elementary and Forest Hills High. They were part of a $134 million bond referendum in 2022.
