YORK, S.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Residents in the York County will no longer have curbside recycling services.

The city of York announced Monday the discontinuation of the services comes “after careful consideration” of its sustainability.

City leaders cite rising processing costs and low participation rates. Despite efforts to adjust to these changes, the cost of continuing curbside recycling has become economically unviable.

“After considering all available options, we have made the difficult decision to end curbside recycling services,” said York Public Works Director Chris Wallace. “We recognize the importance of recycling to our residents and the environment, but we also have a responsibility to manage taxpayer funds wisely.”

The city’s garbage services will remain, with carts emptied once a week. The recycling has been picked up at the same rate.

The final curbside collection will take place on Friday, Sept. 27. Residents will keep their city-issued recycling bins and are encouraged to utilize the drop-off recycling centers, which will continue to operate and accept a wide range of recyclable materials.

The closest recycling center locations near York are:

    • Cotton Belt, 2365 Black Hwy. (S.C. 5)
    • Tirzah, 6190 Old York Road (S.C.161)
