CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – A North Carolina man has died following an accident at Grand Canyon National Park, National Park Service officials announced this week.

Officials said that the man, who has not yet been identified other than that he was 60 years old, was solo backpacking on a multi-day trip and was attempting to do the the Thunder River Trail-Deer Creek loop on Tuesday.

A search that included a helicopter was launched after the man failed to check in with family and his body was recovered around 9:45 a.m. Wednesday along a route connecting the Lower Tapeats Camp and Deer Creek Camp, authorities said.

A cause of death has not yet been released and this remains an active investigation.
