CHARLOTTE ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — A deputy is recovering after an on-duty wreck Saturday morning, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO).

Officials say that just before 7 a.m. on September 7, a driver ran a red light at the intersection of W. 12th Street and N. Church Street which caused MCSO Deputy L. Blackwelder to hit the other vehicle.

After the crash, Deputy Blackwelder was taken to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center by MEDIC, but has since been released from the hospital.

“We are thankful that Deputy Blackwelder is now safely home, resting and recovering,” said Sheriff Gary McFadden. “I’d like to extend my sincere gratitude to Medic for their prompt response. We look forward to Deputy Blackwelder’s return to serving our community once he has fully recovered.”

This crash is just one of several in Charlotte on Saturday. Around noon, officials say a juvenile was killed and four others were seriously injured on Sharon View Road. Then around 2:30 p.m., a wreck on I-85 left a driver and five juveniles with minor injuries.
