EASLEY, S.C. (WSPA) — A 15-year-old boy’s condition is unknown after he was badly burned in a fire Monday night.

The Easley Fire Department said it was around 6:30 p.m. when the call came in about a fire on Wallace Drive.

“The fire was out,” Easley Fire Chief Brad Owen said. “There was no fire at the time but he has sustained severe burns.”

Chief Owen recalled that there was no damage left behind in the kitchen, but he added that a fifteen-year-old was severely burned on his upper body.

Firefighters, EMS and Police were all on scene.

“We began rendering medical aid to the patient, the 15-year-old patient and later we found out after we began our investigation that he had burned himself while cooking,” said Lt. Ashley Anderson.

Chief Owen said officials quickly determined that the boy needed to be flown to the hospital for treatment.

“The upper part of his body received severe injuries, severe burns,” Chief Owen said.

Firefighters explained that recovery time for burns depends on the extent of the injury, but Chief Owen said it could take anywhere from a few weeks to several years to heal.

Chief Owen encouraged everyone to be careful while cooking, adding that a fire can spark faster than you think.

“It is just a matter of seconds that something can happen like this,” Chief Owen said. “Especially if you are cooking on the stove with grease or some type of material like that. It is only a matter of seconds before it can ignite.”

Officials said the teen’s condition is unknown at this time.

Chief Owen said it’s important to teach your children fire safety, like “stop, drop & roll” at an early age.
