‘Deeply disheartened.’ Morrison Family YMCA in Ballantyne vandalized with hate speech

BALLANTYNE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — An investigation is underway after a YMCA in Ballantyne was vandalized by antisemitism and hate speech over the weekend.

The crime occurred at the Morrison Family YMCA along Bryant Farms Road. In addition to the vandalism at the YMCA, a local church down the road was also vandalized Sunday morning, Sept. 8, on Bryant Farms Road, according to a filed police report with CMPD.

At least one person called 911, reporting unknown suspect(s) damaged the outer wall by spray painting graffiti at the Light of Christ United Methodist Church.

It’s unknown at this time if both vandalism incidents are connected. Queen City News has reached out to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police for further information.

Statement released to Queen City News from the YMCA of Greater Charlotte:

“This (Sunday) morning, upon opening our Morrison Family YMCA, we were deeply disheartened to find that our property had been vandalized with hate speech and symbols. We immediately notified law enforcement, and our team is working diligently to remove the graffiti as quickly as possible. We are also grateful to the National Jewish Federation for offering their support during this time.

We are committed to restoring our space and ensuring that our center remains a welcoming and safe environment for everyone. Any remaining vandalism that cannot be addressed today will be resolved promptly.

Hate speech and symbols of intolerance have no place in our society, and certainly not at our YMCA. We stand firm in our mission to foster inclusivity and unity. If you have any information regarding this incident, please contact the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).
