CHARLOTTE ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) – A new mode of transportation in Charlotte is moving forward. On Monday night, Charlotte City Council leaders unanimously approved contracts with two companies to provide microtransit service.

The Charlotte city manager is now authorized to negotiate three-year deals with Dallas-based company MV Transportation and software company, Spare Labs Inc.

Microtransit service is more of an on-demand transit service and riders will be able to connect to the service through the CATS pass mobile app or by contacting a call center for those who do not have a mobile phone.

Recently the City of Gastonia started using micro-transit service, but they replaced the entire bus system. CATS officials say microtransit in Charlotte is an addition to service and has been discussed for a while. It will cost $2.6 million to start the service.

A fare structure for riders has not yet been established. So far, there is no timeline for when the service would start because MV Transportation would need to hire and train employees.
