CHARLOTTE, N.C. (CHARLOTTE SPORTS LIVE) — Panthers defensive lineman Derrick Brown won’t return this season after his injury on Sunday, the team announced Tuesday.

Brown reportedly injured his knee during the season-opening loss to the Saints , and head coach Dave Canales said Monday that the Pro Bowl tackle would “miss extended time.” A day later Brown was placed on injured reserve.

Brown, the team’s lone 2023 Pro Bowler and 2024 team captain, finished Sunday’s game with three tackles.

“Definitely a huge loss, right? He’s one of our best players. That’s big shoes to fill,” Canales said in his press conference. “But at the same time, we’ve got players in there, I want them to know and be encouraged. If you go in, you play with great technique, and you just do your job, we don’t need you to make the special plays that Derrick makes.”

A report from NFL Network said Brown injured his meniscus.

The former first-round pick out of Auburn was second on the team with 103 tackles last season, picking up two sacks.

The team also waived outside linebacker Jamie Sheriff on Tuesday. He was one of the six players claimed from other teams following cuts.

The Associated Press also reported Tuesday that the team signed edge rusher Charles Harris.
