CHARLOTTE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — A virtual public meeting is set for Tuesday night on a proposed satellite shelter for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Animal Care and Control.

The location would be along the 5400 block of South Tryon Street near Tyvola Road, between a tennis court and a cemetery. A zoning sign is in the area indicating a possible change coming to the area.

“The pet population is exponentially larger than when (the shelter) was first built,” said Kelsey Joseph with Friends of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Services. “It was 30 years ago, and the population of Charlotte has more than doubled.”

Joseph noted there is a hope this satellite location could become a “blueprint” for other satellite locations across Mecklenburg County, noting the need for space has only increased over the years.

There are concerns that the construction and ultimate animal noise could bring forth issues for what is now considered a quiet area by many who live, work, and play sports at the recreational facilities nearby.

“I think it’s going to have some effects because of the noise and the smell,” Ricky Cox, who visits a nearby recreational facility on a somewhat regular basis,

The plans for the satellite shelter come on the heels of renovations at CMPD Animal Care and Control’s main location near Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. However, supporters of the satellite shelter have noted that the current shelter’s renovations were to bring it into compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act.

The virtual public meeting is set for Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and can be accessed here .
