CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit and Missing Person’s Unit are joined in a homicide investigation in southwest Charlotte.

Officials say on September 4, the family of 15-year-old Anthony Smith reported him missing. CMPD’s Missing Person’s Unit began a search for Smith.

On September 10, the unit responded to the 600 block of Silverleaf Road as part of the investigation, where they located human remains. The Homicide Unit responded to investigate as the remains were transported to the NC Medical Examiner’s Office.

The next day, September 11, the remains were positively identified as Anthony Smith’s. It was determined that Smith died from a gunshot wound and ruled his death a homicide.

The investigation is active and ongoing.
