MONROE, N.C. ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — A suspect has been hospitalized in critical condition from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after running an officer over during a police pursuit Friday, according to the Monroe Police Department. The officer is recovering at home.

Authorities said the ordeal began at 10:45 a.m. Friday, Sept. 13, as officers responded to a domestic call in the area.

The 911 caller, a mother with children, told dispatchers that her estranged partner was headed toward their home and intended to “cause significant harm” and “burn the home down.”

The 911 caller said that her child’s father was coming with the intent to kill her, and she believed he was armed. Monroe officers were able to intercept the suspect, identified as, Jamil Hall, 29 of Lilesville, as he was entering the neighborhood. Officers tried to pull Hall over. They said he refused to stop and a pursuit began.

The pursuit went towards Sunset Drive where Monroe Police said he attempted to run over a police officer and then eventually made it onto Highway 74 toward Marshville.

Once on Highway 74, Monroe Police said he intentionally struck an officer who was trying to put out stop sticks to end the high-speed pursuit, which at times got to 80/100 mph.

The Monroe officer suffered injuries to his leg. He has since been released from the hospital and is expected to fully recover, authorities said.

Monroe Police said the pursuit continued and the Union County Sheriff’s Office then became involved in the chase as it left the city limits. The sheriff’s office said responding deputies knew this suspect posed a significant threat to the community.

“His intentions were unclear but we knew from the 911 caller he was potentially armed and he had already struck at least one police officer,” a spokesperson with UCSO said.

As the pursuit entered Marshville, a deputy attempted a forced vehicle stop. Hall’s vehicle spun around in a circle and collided with a Monroe Police Department patrol car. Once the vehicle stopped, deputies approached the vehicle to remove Hall, and that’s when they said he shot himself. Hall was airlifted to Charlotte where he remains in critical condition.

    Numerous criminal charges are forthcoming.

Chief Gilliard said, “Our officers intercepted an armed and dangerous individual who was intent to cause harm to innocent people, including our officers. They acted courageously and put themselves in harm’s way to try and end this situation peacefully.”

Sheriff Eddie Cathey commended all involved, saying, “I commend the swift response of all the personnel involved in this investigation and their willingness to put their own safety at risk to end this threat to our community.”

This multi-agency investigation remains ongoing. The NC State Bureau of Investigation has been called in, as protocol. The Union County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the self-inflicted gunshot wound. No deputy or officer fired his or her weapon during this incident.
